London, S.W.1.

4th Jamiary, 1950.

Since I wrote on the 27th September to let you know how matters stood on your three despatches about the Hong Kong University, matters have progressed somewhat.

First of all Sloss, after receiving a long letter from Ride on various financial points got into touch with us here and we had a very useful talk in which he and Cox and Walter Adams took part. One of the results of that talk was my message to you in our telegram No. 1771 about the visit of the Delegates from the Inter-University Council which you have now agreed should be postponed until March. A further result was a formal letter to the Inter-University Council, a copy of which I enclose, emphasizing the Secretary of State's anxiety for continued support for the University, and endeavour- ing to combat the rather pessimistic outlook in regard to the future of the University, which appears to have strongly infected some of the Council's Members. It may well be that we shall have an opportunity of adding to these efforts orally when the next meeting of the Council takes place. I believe Sloss has written fully to Ride giving him his views on a number of points, so I will not burden this letter further.

Sir A. Grantham, K.C.M•G
